Connect: News & Contact
Getting connected. Being known. Choosing to be part of a community of learners. That's what Country Day is all about, and communication is the key. On the links at the left, you'll see many ways to get -- and stay -- in touch with teachers, administrators, parents and students. To contact anyone at the school any time, please check the Directory, email info@aspencountryday.org or call 970-925-1909, then press 200 to reach the office. We are here to provide the personal approach that makes Country Day strong. Here is a sample of a recent family newsletter:

Dancing through 'til spring. . . five busy days ahead
MONDAY
Parent-Teacher Conferences are now
underway. If you did not make an appointment,
please arrange your own convenient time
directly with the classroom teacher (PreK
through Fifth Grades), or with your
child's advisor (Middle School).
Wine donations are awaited
through April 7 in the office; come bring
your bottle to donate to the Spring Fling
"instant wine cellar." Wines of all varieties
and price points have already been donated;
the winner will have a delightful year!
If you would like to buy a
bracelet that may hold the lucky number that
wins the "Instant Wine Cellar" at the party
April 9,
they are $25 each or $100 for four. Reserve
yours in the office when you bring in your
bottle!
TUESDAY
Seventh Graders
interested in traveling to Argentina,
Japan or Chamonix with the Sister Cities
program next year will have an information
session during their first class of the day.
Be on time!
At an assembly
at the end of the day, we'll welcome
the Shining Stars who are here at
Buttermilk this week. This group of children
with cancer is one of
Aspen Country Day's special charities, and
children of all ages have helped with bake
sales, letter writing campaigns, and lemonade
stands to help make a memorable ski week for
the Shining Stars.
WEDNESDAY
One of the biggest
events of the year for Third Grade is
Wednesday afternoon in the gym. It's the
"Night of the Living Dead," your
chance to meet Leonardo DaVinci, Winston
Churchill, and more historical personages.
The children research and
study intensively to learn about their
characters, then transform into them for this
special event. All parents and students are
welcome in the gym from 2 to 3 pm. PreK
parents who are here for pickup: check it out
and imagine your four-year-old
doing this project in a few more
years!
The Fourth Graders in
Clark's class leave for their hut trip
to the Shrine Mountain Inn. They'll return on
Friday directly to Buttermilk.
THURSDAY
The Kindergarten children have been studying
French this semester, and they will sing
the French chansons they've
learned in the classroom
Thursday morning at 8:30 am. Among the songs
they'll be sharing: Sur le pont
d'Avignon (picture, above).
FRIDAY
It's a regular academic
morning, then it's time for our All School
Ski Day at Buttermilk. Parents, children,
teachers -- everyone is welcome to join in!
All students will go to the mountain right
after lunch, and no one will be on campus at
the end of the day. All pickup is at
Buttermilk.
A special event for
All School Ski Day this year is a
scavenger hunt with a pledge drive for Haiti
earthquake relief. Children will ski
around the mountain as they search for clues
to riddles. They are asking friends and
families to support their participation with
a pledge. Any amount you can pledge will be
most welcome. All who participate or collect
pledges will receive a coupon for pizza at
Atlas Pizza in El Jebel.
After the
ski day is over, school is dismissed for
spring break until Monday, April 5.

Community events of note
Shoot some hoops? Aspen
Recreation's Youth Basketball League is still
taking registrations for boys and girls in
Kindergarten through Eighth Grade. This
is a great program that many Country Day
children love. Coaches are still needed as
well. Call 920-5140 right away, as league
play begins the week of March 29th.
Home for Spring Break? Rock Bottom
Ranch offers a popular camp from 9 am to 2 pm
during both weeks of our break. It is open to
children 7 to 11 years old. Search for
wildlife clues like coyote tracks, elk trails
and a beaver lodge in a day of exploration,
storytelling, games and more.
Each day will have a different focus; sign up
for one or all at aspennature.org
or 927-6760.
Can you hold your breath
underwater? The Snowmass Village
Recreation Center is offering a free
underwater Easter Egg Hunt on
Saturday, April 3rd at 11am. Eggs will be
scattered throughout the pool both below
water and above water. Children will be
divided into age-appropriate groups and there
will be one golden egg for each age
group. Please bring a bag/basket for the
water and your own towel! For info call
922-2240.

Alumni Spotlight A special offer from Galerie DeVore
Here at Country Day we love to hear about
what former students are doing, and we're
applauding alumni Karyn Andrade and Tony
Prikryl. With Karinjo DeVore (mom
of alums Nick and Katrina DeVore), they have
started a new gallery downstairs next to INK
café at 520 E. Durant.
Galerie DeVore is a great
addition to
the Aspen art scene. It features the
photography of Tony Prikryl (ACDS alum and son
of PreK teacher Paula Prikryl; that's his
photo, left), along with
the work of noted photographer Nicholas DeVore
III and artist/muralist Charles Andrade.
Between now and the end of April, the gallery
will make a donation to an ACDS scholarship
fund for 30% of the proceeds from purchase of
any artwork or mural/decorative painting
commissions. Please stop by to explore this
very cool art space.
Gallery manager Karyn Andrade says, "I
attended ACDS from Kindergarten all the way
through Eleventh Grade. This is when there
was still a high school. My parents were part
of the original group of
parents that started the school. My fondest
memories are of our outdoor education trips
where we learned life-skills outside the
classroom and
always having the sense of an "extended
family" in the community of teachers
and students - knowing everyone.
