Summer Activities for Children

We are often asked whether Country Day has any summer programs. Unfortunately we do not! But here are some great options for locals and visitors in the Roaring Fork Valley.

Reading club

Fourth Grade teacher Mary Frances Szoradi invites rising Fourth Graders at ACDS for a week of mornings in a fun Reading Club in Aspen. The dates are August 15-19. For details, click here

Maroon Bel Canto Festival Summer Choir Camp

For rising Fourth to Eighth Graders: learn about vocal techniques, sing in a choir, and perform a finale concert, attend Music Festival rehearsals and meet the artists and students -- an immersion in choral music. It's the first week in August and is based in the West End. Scholarships available.

Camp Sunnyside Up

Teachers Lise Sansom and Jill Goudie lead a popular day camp full of adventures -- exploring, learning, playing and, of course, plenty of popsicles and other summer traditions. To sign up, contact Lise Sansom at 970-948-0466.

Aspen Art Museum

This summer, kids ages 4 to 14 investigate: How can art change the world? Students have the chance to cultivate awareness of environment and our power to shape it through Workshops such as Do You See What I See?, ¡Viva la Printmaking Revolución!, Utopia Island, Paradox in Place, and Teen Design Challenge.

Piano lessons

Theatre Aspen School

Theatre Aspen has a full lineup of summer programs for children, including the Princess & the Pea, Glee Factor camp, Making Movies - Claymation & Voice Acting, and more. Singing, dancing, puppetry, mask-making, and storytelling make for busy days. Click for more information.

Tutoring, babysitting

Kindergarten teacher Christina Schluter is available for tutoring and babysitting this summer. She has experience watching children from birth to 15 years old and is certified in CPR (infant to adult). Christina is available to help preschool and elementary children in reading, writing, math, phonics, socio-emotional education, and more. WILD@ART weeks for ages 9-12

"Nature Inside Out" and "Printing Passion" are some of the intriguing workshops for kids at WILD@ART with artist Erica Balderson/Murray. There's a different theme each week in a six-week series in June & July for kids ages 9-12. Explore the creative process of making art and celebrating the natural surroundings of the Hunter Creek Valley.

Camp SMashBox

"Old school play in a new school way, where kids and their imaginations run wild outside all day." Based in Snowmass Village, with weeks for kids in Kindergarten through Eighth Grade.

Earth Keepers Community Day Camp

Aspen TREE has farmyard experiences, nature discovery, gardening, and arts and crafts day programs for all ages. A special "parent tot" farmyard program is for 1-5 year olds on Fridays from 10:30-noon through the summer, and day camp (registrable by the day, 3 day, or week at a time) is for 5-11 year olds. All programs are at Aspen TREE "FarmPark" at Cozy Point Ranch.


Second Grade teacher Alexandra Hughes will work with students going into First, Second, and Third Grades in reading, writing, and math. Available through July, and the last week of August.  Contact, 917-825-1941 


Snowmass Village Rec Center

The Snowmass Rec Center is a gem - convenient for families living or visiting in Snowmass Village, with a beautiful outdoor pool and skate park. Activities include indoor rock climbing, swimming, hiking, arts & crafts, outdoor activities, gym and field activities, playgrounds, field trips, tennis, volleyball, and much more. Tutoring: Spanish

Maria Carbonetti, Spanish teacher, is available for tutoring beginning in mid-June throughout the summer (with the exception of July 29-August 7th).; 970-923-2355; or 917-902-1042. 

Ajax Adventure Camp

Nine weeks of all sorts of mountain adventures, including rock climbing, horseback riding, archery, canoeing, photography, whitewater rafting, "Iron Chef Campout" and "Scavenger Hunt Campout" overnight trips, plus wacky additions like Polar Bear Club, fort-building, and even mud-hat making.

Tutoring: Math

Bart Pepitone, math teacher in the ACDS Middle School, is available for tutoring in mathematics, grades 4 through high school. Contact 970-379-9233.

Red Brick Summer Art Workshops

A central location -- at the Red Brick Center for the Arts on Hallam Street in Aspen -- makes these workshops convenient for families based in town during the summer. Topics range from "Camp Clay" to "Mosaic Madness" and "Mimic the Masters." Call 429-2777 or visit

Digital Media Academy

The acclaimed Digital Media Academy returns to Aspen with summer. Kids ages 8 to 12 can explore "adventures in programming" or "adventures in game design for iPhone or iPad" and much more. 

City of Aspen rec department

The City of Aspen offers busy day camps, along with other activities offered through the summer. There's a track program, summer climbing and gymnastics programs and much more at

Aspen Kayak Academy

Get out on the river to practice your paddling skills! Kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) for kids and grownups.

Anderson Ranch Arts Center

Young artists ages 4 to 17 have a whole campus full of artmaking opportunities at their fingertips at this inspiring location in Snowmass Village. This year's programs cover beading, batik, stop-motion photography, and even a "mixed-media mashup." Act quickly, as these fill up fast.

Yellow Canary

A whimsical arts-and-crafts studio for children aged 20 months to 10 years old. You can drop by for a half-day session all summer long (schedule here:, with "Awesome Art Camps" and "Easy, Breezy Drop-in Classes." Pitkin County Library summer reading programs

There's always something fun happening at the library, opening this summer with an all new kids' room. This year's summer reading program theme is On your mark, get set, READ with a kickoff party June 3. Plus, story hours every week. Call (970) 429-1900 or

Mountain Kids Academy

One of the few Aspen summer activities that combines traditional team sports (lacrosse, soccer, basketball, rugby, and softball/baseball) with more backcountry-related activities, Mountain Kids Academy offers week-long sessions in June and the first part of July. Go to

ACES at Hallam Lake & Rock Bottom Ranch

The Aspen Center for Environmental Studies is abuzz with children's voices and laughter during the summer months. Fun and educational children's day camps and workshops are for immersing yourself in the natural world. PS to parents: there are also some great day-long programs for adults.

The Art Base

Formerly the Wyly art center in Basalt, the Art Base has a great series of summer programs for kids including "Flower Power" and a digital storytelling class with top photographic instructor Derek Johnston.

Rock and Roll Academy

Summer Rock Camps take students through the entire process of being in a band, choosing music and instruments, and giving a concert performance at the end of the week. Summer Rock Camps are designed to be both fun and challenging, focusing on the social, emotional, and musical aspects of playing in a band.
