Girls on the Run: so much fun

At the wrap party this week for the after-school program called Girls on the Run, the cake and the ice cream were not the only things that left a sweet taste. These girls and their attitudes -- all we can say is just, wow. In its fourth year at Country Day, the fall program drew a half dozen girls for afternoon practices on campus leading up to a 5K run in Steamboat at the end of October.
The spirited afternoon sessions were led by Lower School Science teacher Lise Sansom, with additional coaching from Liz Napolitano and Marge Dye (left). and some parent assistants. Twice a week, the girls would do their warmups, cheers, and circuits of the campus; they'd also practice at home on weekends. All that training built far more than running skills. They learned the big life lesson that if you set your mind to it, practice frequently, and bring joy to that practice, you can accomplish a big goal.

With a couple months of afternoon practice under their belts, the girls traveled to Steamboat Springs last weekend for a big 5K run that draws girls from all over the Western Slope. Two Country Day students, Shelby G. and Fiona B., came in third and fourth place in a field of more than 400 runners. Their teammates Gigi V., Alice A., and Rocksy K. finished with tremendous verve and style, too.

A big part of the Girls on the Run ethos is community service, and each year the Country Day girls have completed service projects. This year, they collected t-shirts from the thrift shop, layered them on each other until everyone was covered in about 10 shirts, then took them off all together and stitched them into dog beds for the animal shelter. Congratulations to all the girls and coaches on a great season!
