On the Journey
news reel: stories of People, places, and learning AT Aspen Country Day School
A day of spoken word poetry at ACDS was mesmerizing. Myrlin Hepworth, poet, emcee and teaching artist from Phoenix, led workshop-format lessons with students all day long. Then the entire Middle School gathered in the atrium for a performance and Q & A session with three amazing poets.
Middle School Head Brenda Stockdale says:
Bringing Aspen Words poetry into our classrooms was a rare and beautiful experience for all. Myrlin's messages to our budding poets: “Be brave, be respectful, and your voice matters,” not only captivated our students, but also gave students freedom and confidence to listen to their own voices. He said, “Try not to limit your imagination by getting in the way of yourself.” What a powerful message!
We are so fortunate to have had this opportunity to learn from master poets, including Mercedez Holtry and Toluwanimi Obiwole. Thank you, Aspen Words, for sharing this one-of-a-kind experience with our community!
