Q: Middle School Advisory: what's it all about?
A: Relationships.

When students move from Lower School to Middle School, they leave their homeroom and enter the advisory program, a fundamental aspect of their last three years at Country Day where building relationships among students and faculty, and between school and home, is key.

Advisory provides each student a "home base" - a connection with an adult and small group of peers. Advisors support their advisees in all sorts of ways, such as:

  • fostering students' academic independence and monitoring their progress

  • helping students build positive relationships with peers and adults

  • supporting adolescents' social/emotional needs

  • focusing on character education, including Country Day's monthly themes

  • communicating with other faculty, staff, and parents

  • engaging in community involvement

  • developing student leadership opportunities

  • exploring group dynamics

  • having fun

Advisory meets on three occasions during a typical week:

  • Connections (30 min.) - community building

  • Seminar (45 min.) - topics for discussion or a focused activity

  • Guided study hall (45 min.) - time to work on academics with the advisor checking in with each individual student

2017-2018 Advisors:

  • Sixth Grade: Ginger Lewis, Shelley Supplee, Tyler Valtin

  • Seventh Grade: Mark Sumera, Megan Talarico, Zeke Tiernan

  • Eighth Grade: Vanessa Abrahams, Audrey Sherry Gunshor, Susan Benner/Alex Tiernan

Examples of topics of study/activities:

  • Mindfulness

  • Community

  • Gratitude

  • Inclusiveness

  • Bullying

  • Conference preparation

  • Service learning

  • Goal setting

  • Brain development

  • Relationships

  • Drug education

  • Health and wellness

  • Technology

  • Communication and interpersonal skills

Parents and children are encouraged to have conversations about what they're discussing and studying in advisory, then to share any questions or insights with the Middle School team at any time. Advisory is such a valuable partnership between school and home.
