Head of School Josh Wolman writes:

In the spirit of growing and learning, and my goal of inviting to ACDS people who are renowned in their field, I am delighted to share that Dr. Kimberly Schonert-Reichl will be visiting ACDS in December to lend her Social Emotional learning expertise to our community.  Morgan, Brenda, Jenn and I have been in communication with Dr. Schonert-Reichl to set up a schedule that will include time with parents, faculty and students as well as time for her to see class meetings, advisory and other parts of the school day.

Similar to the team of educators who visited in May 2017 to look at the ACDS math program, Dr. Schonert-Reichl will share thoughts, suggestions and a report from her visit. She has visited many different schools, has been a guest lecturer across the country, and is a frequent presenter at national conferences.

The dates are December 9, 10 and 11. All parents are invited to a coffee on campus with Dr. Schonert-Reichl on Tuesday, December 11 at 8 am. After-school homework help is cancelled for Monday, December 10 as all faculty will be in a workshop with our visitor.

Dr. Schonert-Reichl (watch her recent video about Social-Emotional Learning) is a renowned expert in the area of social and emotional learning (SEL) research with children and adolescents, particularly in relation to the identification of the processes and mechanisms that foster positive human qualities such as empathy, compassion, altruism, and resiliency. For more than two decades, Dr. Schonert-Reichl's research has focused on the social and emotional development of children and adolescents in school and community settings. Her current projects include studies examining the effectiveness of classroom-based universal social and emotional learning (SEL) programs including the MindUp program, the Taxi Dog Educational Curriculum, and the Random Acts of Kindness program. Dr. Schonert-Reichl is also conducting interdisciplinary research in collaboration with neuroscientists and psychobiologists examining the relation of executive functions and biological processes to children's social and emotional development in school settings.
