Living our mountain heritage: a morning with Mike Marolt
Posted 11/12/2018 09:32AM

Middle Schoolers had a special guest at assembly Friday: acclaimed mountaineer Mike Marolt. His tales of high-altitude expeditions in the Himalaya transfixed the Sixth, Seventh, and Eighth Graders, who asked dozens of questions and left with some serious inspiration for their own outdoor adventures.

"Whatever your passion turns out to be, whatever it is that you love most above all, don't let anyone stop you from trying," Marolt counseled. "That applies to life and to life in the mountains."

Aspen natives Mike and Steve Marolt have made 13 Himalayan ski expeditions and dozens of ski expeditions to South America's Andes Range. They are pioneers in winter Himalayan skiing with two world-record high-winter ski descents. They climb and ski without the aid of supplemental oxygen, porters, or altitude drugs. They are leaders in a community of ski mountaineers that have pushed the boundary of what is possible for human beings to accomplish physically and mentally in the highest peaks on earth.

The morning with Marolt offered students a way to make connections to their summer homework assignment, which awas an interdisciplinary project based on a book about a young mountaineer, Roland Smith's novel Peak. (Here's the complete assignment, which all Middle School students completed over the summer of 2018.)

Looking forward to the showing of the Marolt twins' newest film, Beyond Skiing Everest, at the Wheeler December 14. Tickets at For the altitude resources mentioned Friday, click here:
